Days after calling for a trade truce with China, US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that Washington itself is a “threat” to Beijing. In an interview with CBS News, Trump said China is “always watching us,” amid escalating cyber and military tensions.

Trump admitted that both nations are locked in a constant “competitive watch,” while emphasizing the need for cooperation over conflict. He also expressed concern about China’s rapid nuclear buildup, warning that Beijing could reach nuclear parity with the US within five years.

“We have enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world 150 times,” Trump said, stressing the urgency of global denuclearisation. He revealed ongoing discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding nuclear arms reduction.

Trump’s recent order for new US nuclear tests sparked global debate, though Energy Secretary Chris Wright clarified they would be non-explosive system tests to ensure modernisation of nuclear capabilities.

The President also highlighted China’s dominance in rare earth minerals, a critical factor in global technology and defense industries. He admitted both sides had “acted irrationally” during previous trade disputes but insisted that fair cooperation could benefit both powers.

The remarks came after Trump and Xi met during the 32nd APEC Economic Ministers’ Meeting in South Korea — their first in-person meeting in over six years.
